Rajasthan General Studies | General Knowledge of Rajasthan useful for RPSC RAS, RSMSSB and other competitive exams. The Rajasthan (also known as the land of kings) is a state in northwestern India. It covers 342,239 square kilometres or 10.4 per cent of India’s total geographical area. It is the largest Indian state by area and the seventh largest by population.
The history of the Indian state of Rajasthan is about 5000 years old. The history of Rajasthan can be classified into three parts owing to the different epochs- Ancient, Medieval and Modern.
Rajput clans emerged and held their sway over different parts of Rajasthan from about 700 AD. Before that, Rajasthan was a part of several republics. It was a part of the Mauryan Empire. The Pratihars ruled Rajasthan and most of northern India during 750-1000 AD. Between 1000-1200 AD, Rajasthan witnessed the struggle for supremacy between Chalukyas, Parmars and Chauhans.
Around 1200 AD a part of Rajasthan came under Muslim rulers. The principal centers of their powers were Nagaur and Ajmer. Ranthambore was also under their suzerainty. At the beginning of the 13th century AD, the most prominent and powerful state of Rajasthan was Mewar.
Rajasthan had never been united politically until its domination by Mughal Emperor – Akbar. Mughal power started to decline after 1707. The Marathas penetrated Rajasthan upon the decline of the Mughal Empire. In 1755 they occupied Ajmer. The beginning of the 19th Century was marked by the onslaught of the Pindaris.
Rajasthan is on India’s northwestern side, where it comprises most of the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert (Great Indian Desert) and shares a border with the Pakistani provinces of Punjab to the northwest and Sindh to the west, along the Sutlej-Indus River valley.
Rajasthan is bordered by five other Indian states:
- Punjab to the north;
- Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to the northeast;
- Madhya Pradesh to the southeast; and
- Gujarat to the southwest.
Its geographical location is 23°.3′ to 30°.12′ North latitude and 69°.30′ to 78°.17′ East longitude, with the Tropic of Cancer passing through its southernmost tip.
