Mahajanapadas and Uttar Pradesh: Ancient History of UP. The Mahajanapadas were sixteen kingdoms and aristocratic republics that existed in ancient India from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE, during the second urbanisation period.
Buddhist Literature (Anguttara Nikaya, Maha Vastu) and Jain Literature (Bhagavati Sutra) contain 16 Mahajanapadas. Among 16 Mahajanapadas, only 8 were located in Uttar Pradesh. These were Kuru, Panchal, Shursena, Vatsa, Kosala, Malla, Kashi and Chedi.
